Located in Buffalo, New York and part of the phased redevelopment of the Inner Harbor Development; Canalside, is a mixed-use, urban destination, on approximately 20 acres over five City blocks near the foot of Main Street. This portion of the redevelopment is at the southern portion of the former Memorial Auditorium (South Aud Block).
This project consists of a new four-story, approximately 38,000 square foot building, housing a children’s museum and alterations to an existing sub-basement structure that houses water for ice making equipment, for the historic replica canal, which are frozen in the winter months to become New York States largest outdoor ice skating rink.
In keeping with the overall Canalside theme, the building is designed to be representative of the style of the buildings that lined the canals as well as the additions the buildings often underwent over time as the city grew its industry.
Careful attention was used in selecting building components and preparing a materials’ pallet that was shared by and evocative of the supportive structures and the historic Erie Canal District. South Aud Block is LEED Certified, under version 4.1, for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions in areas including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
